Menzo Weddings provides wedding DJ and MC services across Michigan, and we travel to Grand Rapids and West Michigan for weddings. Dave has played here before. In July 2010, Wedding Chicks featured a farm wedding at Piccard Farm in Marne, with the reception at The B.O.B. in downtown Grand Rapids, and credited Dave Menzo as the ceremony musician. Founder Dave Menzo has been performing since 2001 and has played Michigan weddings for more than a decade, in barns, on farms, at golf clubs, in historic ballrooms and beside the water.

For a West Michigan wedding, most couples start with the wedding DJ and MC for the reception. That's the core booking. If you want live music too, you add it: live acoustic music for your ceremony, a cocktail-hour set, or live drums, guitar, sax or violin on top of the DJ set. Whatever you add runs from one plan.

A Grand Rapids wedding Dave has played

A farm wedding at Piccard Farm, Marne, with the reception at The B.O.B.

On July 23, 2010, the wedding blog Wedding Chicks published a Michigan farm-style wedding story. The ceremony was at Piccard Farm in Marne, northwest of Grand Rapids, and the reception was at The B.O.B. in downtown Grand Rapids. The feature credits "Dave Menzo – Ceremony Musician", and the photographs are by Nicole Ladonne Photography. The couple isn't named in the feature, so we don't name them here, and we don't have the photographs to show you, which is why this page uses a licensed image.

That wedding has the shape of a lot of West Michigan weddings: vows out on a farm, then a drive into the city for dinner and dancing. When the ceremony and the reception are in different places, the music for each needs to be planned with the drive between them in mind, so nobody misses your entrance.

Weddings we've played elsewhere that look like West Michigan

Most of the weddings on this site are on the east side of the state. Here are the ones closest to the barns, farms and beaches West Michigan is known for.

If you're getting married in Grand Rapids, Holland, Grand Haven, Saugatuck or anywhere nearby, tell us the venue when you check your date. We'll go through the space together, and get the details we need from your coordinator well ahead of the day. We only list a venue on this site once we've played it.

What's different about a West Michigan wedding?

Barns and farm venues

West Michigan has a lot of farmland around Grand Rapids, and plenty of barn and farm venues with it. They spread the day out: a ceremony in a field or an orchard, cocktails on the lawn, dinner and dancing in the barn. Old barns can also be echoey inside, with wood and high rafters, so speeches need to be clear and dinner music needs to sit low enough to talk over. Music for the whole day, from one plan, moves with your guests from one spot to the next.

Lake Michigan beach ceremonies

On the west side of the state, the sun sets over the water. That's the reason a lot of couples want a beach or dune ceremony near Holland, Grand Haven or Saugatuck, and the golden-hour photos are worth it. The lake also brings wind, and wind takes words and music with it. Pick a spot with some shelter if you can, have a backup in mind, and check what the beach or park allows for events before you fall in love with it. Then tell us exactly where you'll stand, and we'll plan the ceremony music for that spot.

Sunsets a little later

West Michigan sits at the western edge of the Eastern time zone, so summer sunsets come a little later than they do on the Detroit side of the state. Check the exact time for your date. It shapes when you'll want portraits and when the dance floor fills.

Downtown Grand Rapids

Downtown Grand Rapids sits on the Grand River, with hotels, historic buildings and event spaces close together. If your guests are staying downtown and the ceremony is out at a farm, or the other way round, plan the shuttles and the timeline together, so people arrive in time for your entrance.

How do you plan a West Michigan wedding with us?

The planning works the same way whether you're getting married down the road from us or on the other side of the state. Most of it happens by phone, video call and email, long before the day.

  1. Check your date. Tell us your date, your venue, and whether you'd like to add live music to your DJ booking. If the date is open, we talk.
  2. A planning call. How you met, the songs that belong to you, the ones your families can't stay seated for, and the ones nobody should hear.
  3. Your ceremony and reception plan. Processional timing, cocktail-hour songs, introductions, toasts, first dances and a do-not-play list, all written down.
  4. Lining it up. We fit the music to your planner's, venue's and photographer's timeline, including the sunset photo break.
  5. The day. We play the plan you've already signed off, and read the room around it.

We're based in Ann Arbor and Detroit, and Grand Rapids is a straight run across the state on I-96. We plan around the drive the same way we plan around anything else on your day.

What can you book for a Grand Rapids wedding?

The wedding DJ and MC is the core booking. Ceremony music, a cocktail-hour set and DJ plus live music are add-ons to it. A live band package can have a DJ too, playing between sets and closing out the night, so you don't have to choose one or the other.

Wedding DJ and MC

Dinner music people can talk over, then a dance floor that builds through the night. We plan it with you and keep your do-not-play list close. On the microphone: entrances, toasts, cake, the sunset photo break and the last dance, announced clearly and on time. See wedding MC and what a wedding MC does.

Live ceremony music

Acoustic guitar and vocals, or piano, for your prelude, processional, signing and recessional. In an orchard, on a dune or in a barn, live acoustic music fits the setting. We choose the songs together, and we time your processional so the part you love lands as you start down the aisle. See live ceremony music and our acoustic ceremony songs guide.

Cocktail hour

A live acoustic set on the lawn or the patio while you're off taking sunset photos. See cocktail hour music and our cocktail hour music guide.

DJ plus live music

Live drums, guitar, sax or violin, in any combination, over the songs your guests know, added to your DJ booking. In a barn, one or two live players give you some of the feel of a band without a full stage. See DJ plus live music.

Live wedding band

If you want a full band, see the live wedding band page: a band package can have a DJ playing between sets and closing out the night. Or read our DJ, live band or both guide first.

Common questions

Has Menzo Weddings played weddings in Grand Rapids?

Yes. Dave was the ceremony musician for a farm wedding at Piccard Farm in Marne, with the reception at The B.O.B. in downtown Grand Rapids, which Wedding Chicks featured as a wedding story in July 2010. We don't have photographs of it to show here, so this page uses a licensed image instead.

Do you travel to West Michigan for weddings?

Yes. We play all of Michigan, and Grand Rapids, Holland and the lakeshore are part of that. We're based in Ann Arbor and Detroit, so we'll talk about what the travel means for your date when you check your date.

Can you play a Lake Michigan beach ceremony?

Yes. Dave played a ceremony overlooking Lake Michigan, up north in 2016. On a beach, wind is the main thing to plan for, along with any rules the beach or park has for events. Check those with the city, township or park first, then tell us exactly where you'll stand, and we'll plan the music around it.

We're having a barn wedding near Grand Rapids. Have you played barn and farm venues?

Yes. Dave played the ceremony at Piccard Farm in Marne, and on the east side of the state he has played Revel Run in Chelsea, Zingerman's Cornman Farms in Dexter and Everlastings in the Wildwood in Owosso. Barns and farms spread the day across a property, so adding the ceremony and cocktail hour to your DJ booking, on one plan, keeps things simple.

Is there a wedding DJ in Grand Rapids who also plays live guitar?

Yes. Dave Menzo sings and plays guitar as well as DJing, and DJ plus live music adds live musicians on top of your DJ set, in any combination of drums, guitar, sax and violin. You can add live ceremony and cocktail hour music too.

Can we add live ceremony music for a West Michigan wedding?

Yes. Live ceremony music, on acoustic guitar and vocals or piano, is added to your Wedding DJ and MC booking, so the ceremony and reception run from one plan, even when they're in different places.
