More than pressing play

A wedding DJ’s real job isn’t pressing play. It’s knowing that your aunt will dance to Motown but not to anything after 2005, that your college friends have been waiting all night for one song, and that the floor needs a breather after the fourth fast one in a row.

The Wedding DJ and MC is the heart of what we do. Plenty of couples book the DJ and nothing else, and that’s a full night. If you want live music too, you add it: a live ceremony, a live cocktail hour, or live drums, guitar, sax or violin on top of the DJ set.

  1. 01Planned with you, song by song

Must-plays, do-not-plays, entrance songs and the order of the night. The plan we build together is the one played on the night.

  2. 02Played for the room, not a playlist

Every crowd is different. We plan the music with you, then play it for the people in front of us: lifting the energy when the floor is ready, easing it when dinner needs room to breathe, and saving the songs your guests have waited for until the moment they land hardest.

  3. 03Sound you don't notice

Toasts you can hear from the back table and a floor loud enough to feel. Dave was a 2021 Detroit Music Awards nominee for live sound.

From the booth

Played for the room, not a playlist

A Detroit ballroom moves differently from sixty friends in a barn. We watch who’s dancing and who’s standing at the edge, and play to bring them in.

The night

The moments we play for

Music for the whole reception, from your grand entrance to the last song.

  1. 01Grand entrance

Your wedding party on songs they picked, each introduced by name, then the two of you.

  2. 02Dinner and toasts

The microphone where it needs to be, then music that fills the room without taking it over.

  3. 03First dance

Your song, edited to the length you want, with any tradition you’re including cued and ready.

  4. 04Open dancing

A first set for everyone, then the floor is yours. If it thins, we change direction before it empties.

  5. 05The last song

A last dance chosen together, timed with your venue and photographer so the send-off happens on cue.

What’s included

Everything the reception needs

01

A plan built with you

Planning

Must-plays, do-not-plays, entrance songs and the order of the night. Your do-not-play list wins, no matter who asks.

02

Your MC

On the microphone

Entrances, toasts, the cake and the send-off, announced clearly and on time. See wedding MC.

03

Sound you don’t notice

Sound

Toasts you can hear from the back table and a floor loud enough to feel. Dave was a 2021 Detroit Music Awards nominee for Outstanding Live Sound Tech.

The equipment depends on your venue and guest count: speakers, microphones for toasts, and any dance-floor lighting. We’ll go through what makes sense for your room when you check your date. Want live music too? Add ceremony music, a cocktail hour set or DJ plus live music.

What makes a good wedding DJ

Three things, and a list

Reading the room

A Detroit ballroom moves differently from sixty friends in a barn. The songs that fill one floor clear another. A good DJ watches who’s dancing and plays to bring the rest in.

Pacing the night

Dinner needs music people can talk over. The first open set needs songs everyone knows. Later the floor is yours, and the last half hour needs to land so the night ends full.

Your do-not-play list

Fewer couples bring the list of songs they never want to hear again, and it’s just as useful. A line dance you’re done with, or a song that belongs to an ex: tell us and it won’t get played.

DJ, band or both?

Most couples start with a DJ and add live music where they want it. A live wedding band package can have a DJ between sets too. Our DJ, live band or both guide walks through it.

Who you’re booking

A musician behind the decks

Founder Dave Menzo has been performing since 2001 and has played Michigan weddings for more than a decade, from The Masonic Temple in Detroit and Laurel Manor in Livonia to The Oakley in Holly and Revel Run in Chelsea.

He also sings and plays guitar and piano, and that shapes how we DJ: songs that build, transitions that land, and a night with a shape to it.

Planning

How planning your music works

  1. Check your date

Tell us your date, your venue, and whether you’d like to add live music. Dave reads every inquiry and replies himself.

  2. We talk

About how you met, the music you love, the songs your family can’t stay seated for, and your guests: ages, where they’re from, who’ll be first on the floor.

  3. We build the plan

Entrance songs, first dance, parent dances, must-plays, a do-not-play list and the order of the night, lined up with your venue and planner.

  4. The day

We play the plan and read the room around it. Your do-not-play list stays close all night.

Good to know

Common questions

Do you take requests from guests?

That's up to you. Some couples love requests, because it gets their friends invested in the dance floor. Others want a tighter night. Either way, your do-not-play list wins: if a guest asks for a song you've ruled out, it doesn't get played.

How do you keep the dance floor full with guests of every age?

By watching it. We start with songs that bring everyone out, the ones grandparents and college friends both know, then follow whoever is dancing. If the floor thins, we change direction before it empties.

Can you edit our first dance song?

Yes. If your song is five minutes and you'd rather dance for two and a half, we'll edit it to the length you want, ending at a natural place in the song rather than a fade. If you'd like it sung live instead, see DJ plus live music.

Do you also MC the reception?

Yes. MC work is part of the Wedding DJ and MC booking: on the microphone for entrances, toasts, the cake and the send-off. See wedding MC for how we run the night's announcements.

Do you play clean versions of songs?

Tell us where you'd like the line to be. Some couples want radio edits all night because of the kids and grandparents. Others are fine with anything after a certain hour. We'll set it together when we plan.

Can you DJ our reception and play our ceremony too?

Yes. Add live ceremony music on guitar and vocals or piano, a cocktail hour set, or live musicians on top of the DJ set itself, in any combination of drums, guitar, sax and violin. Most couples start with the DJ and add live music where they want it.

Do you DJ weddings outside Ann Arbor and Detroit?

Yes. Dave has DJ'd weddings from Grosse Pointe to Williamston, Holly and Owosso, and Menzo Weddings plays across Michigan, including Lansing, Grand Rapids and Northern Michigan.
