Hybrid package

DJ plus live music for Michigan weddings

Live musicians on top of your wedding DJ set: drums, guitar, sax and violin, in any combination you like, over the songs your guests already know.

Katie & Dennis's reception, Revel Run

It's ten o'clock, the floor is full, the chorus everyone knows is coming, and instead of the DJ just turning it up, live sax, violin, guitar or drums come in over the track and the room turns around to watch.

DJ plus live music is a hybrid package built on your Menzo Weddings Wedding DJ and MC booking. Live musicians play on top of the DJ set, in any combination of drums, guitar, sax and violin. Plenty of couples book the DJ and MC on its own, and that's a full night. This is for couples who want live music on the dance floor too, without giving up the recordings their guests are waiting for.

Menzo Weddings provides wedding DJ and live music across Ann Arbor, Metro Detroit and the rest of Michigan. Founder Dave Menzo has been performing since 2001 and has played Michigan weddings for more than a decade, DJing receptions at places like The Masonic Temple in Detroit and Zingerman's Cornman Farms in Dexter. He sings, plays guitar and piano, and DJs, and outside weddings he's a recording artist known for a live looping show, a "one man band on steroids," where he builds songs track by track on the spot. DJ plus live music grew out of doing both.

Below: how it works, which instruments you can add, how it fits with a band, and which songs suit it.

What is a DJ and live music hybrid?

It's a wedding DJ set with live music on top of it.

For most of the reception, it's a DJ night: your entrance songs, dinner music, first dance and open dancing, all from the original recordings, paced to the room. Then, at the moments we've chosen and the ones the room calls for, live musicians play over the track. The recording keeps the full sound of the song. The live instruments turn it into a performance.

People who were sitting drift toward the floor. The song they've heard a hundred times sounds new because someone is playing it in front of them. And because the DJ set carries the night, the music keeps going between the live moments.

Which instruments can be added to the DJ?

Four, in any combination with the DJ: drums, guitar, sax and violin. Add one, pair two, or bring in all four. Each changes the night in its own way.

  • Drums. Live drums played with the recorded beat give the dance floor the punch of a band.
  • Guitar. A guitar part over a song everyone knows. Dave sings and plays guitar, so a live vocal can come with it.
  • Sax. A melody line over a dance track, or a solo at the top of a chorus.
  • Violin. A melody that suits a first dance as well as a full floor.

Which mix suits you depends on your crowd, your room and the songs you love. Tell us what you're picturing and we'll talk it through.

What's included in DJ plus live music?

  • Your Wedding DJ and MC booking, with live music on top. Your must-plays, your do-not-play list and the order of the night, planned with you.
  • Live musicians over the DJ set. Any combination of drums, guitar, sax and violin, at the songs you choose and the moments the room calls for.
  • The option of a live first dance. Your song played for you, or the recording edited to the length you want.
  • More live music if you want it. Ceremony music and a cocktail-hour set can be added to your DJ booking too: acoustic guitar and vocals, or piano.
  • One plan. Built with you, from the first conversation to the last song.

Equipment and setup depend on your venue, your guest count and which instruments you add, so we'll go through them with you for your room rather than list a package here. Tell us about your venue when you check your date.

Where does the live music go in the night?

The night runs on your DJ set, with live instruments brought in where they count. These are the moments couples most often choose:

  • Your first dance. Where live music counts most: your song played for the two of you. Or, if the original recording is the one that's yours, the recording, edited to the length you want.
  • A parent dance or a song for a grandparent. A song for the couple who've been married sixty years, played for them in the room.
  • The big singalong. When the floor is full and a song everyone knows reaches its chorus, live instruments over the track. The recording keeps its full sound; the live part makes the room look up. Then back to the mix, without a gap.
  • The last song. A last dance, live or recorded, timed with your venue and photographer for the send-off.

Entrances, toasts and dinner stay with the DJ and MC side of your booking: your wedding party announced by name, toasts you can hear from the back table, and dinner music people can talk over. See wedding MC.

DJ, live band, or a combination?

You don't have to choose one or the other. A DJ booking can have live music added at the ceremony, at cocktail hour or on the dance floor, and a live band package can have a DJ playing between sets and closing out the night. Here's how the main shapes compare. For the full version, read our DJ, live band or both guide.

Band energy, with every song still on the table

The reason couples want live musicians is the feeling in the room. People playing for the people in front of them change how a dance floor behaves. Guests watch. They sing back. The night feels like an event rather than a playlist.

The reason some couples hesitate about a full band is song choice. No band can play every song in every style, so some of the songs your guests are waiting for either get a band's version or don't get played.

DJ plus live music keeps both. The DJ set gives you every song in its original sound, at whatever moment the room needs it. The live drums, guitar, sax or violin give you the performance. You can keep it to one instrument for a smaller room, or add more where there's space, and it works in a Detroit ballroom as well as a barn in Chelsea.

If you want a band playing most of the night, a live wedding band is the answer, and it can still come with a DJ for the breaks and the end of the night. If you've been going back and forth between a DJ and a band, a combination is often what you were looking for.

Who is DJ plus live music for?

  • Couples who love live music but don't want to give up the original songs on the dance floor.
  • Couples who already want a DJ and would like live music on top of it.
  • Couples with a sound in mind, like sax over dance tracks, a violin first dance or live drums for the peak of the night.
  • Families with a wide age range, where the night has to work for grandparents and college friends alike.
  • Anyone who wants a first dance played live, without booking a separate musician just for those few minutes.

Which songs get played live?

We decide together, and the room fills in the rest on the night.

Start with the moments that carry the most meaning: your first dance, a parent dance, a song for a grandparent, the song your friends will sing loudest. Those are the places live music makes a room stop.

Then there are songs built for it: big choruses, songs with a sax or guitar part everyone recognises, songs that make a room sing back. On the night, when the floor is full and a song like that comes up, the live players come in.

Not every song works with live instruments over a track, and we'll tell you plainly which of your favorites will and won't. If one won't, the recording plays and the live moment is saved for a song where it'll land. Our first dance songs played live guide is a good place to start.

What does a musician behind the DJ booth bring to the night?

Dave is a musician as well as a DJ, and that changes more than the live moments.

Hearing the room like a musician

We think about a reception the way a musician thinks about a set: an opening that brings people in, a build, a peak and an ending that lands. The DJ set follows that shape, and the live moments sit at the top of it.

Nothing gets lost between vendors

If you add ceremony music or a cocktail-hour set as well, the hand-offs are ours to manage. Your processional, your cocktail set and your grand entrance are all in one plan.

Live moments can happen when they're needed

A band plays a set list. A DJ with live players on top can respond. If a toast runs long and the room needs lifting, or a family suddenly takes over the floor the way Heather and Tyler's did for the Monster Mash at Everlastings in the Wildwood, the right song can be there, recorded or live.

Who is Dave Menzo?

Menzo Weddings is part of Menzo Media, the Ann Arbor company Dave Menzo has run since it was founded in January 2015. Dave has been performing since 2001, when he recorded his first solo album. Since then he's made the albums Shhh… (2015, recorded on borrowed library instruments), Color Wheel and VISION QUEST (2026), and singles including "Meet Me in the Water," "IS IT JUST ME???" and "BOAT SZN." He sings, plays guitar and piano, and DJs.

His band, the Dave Menzo Band, toured Japan in September and October 2026 on the VISION QUEST tour and has played showcases at SXSW. His solo shows are known for live looping: building a song track by track, on the spot, in front of the audience.

He's been written about in Current Magazine, the Ann Arbor Observer, Pulp and Local Spins, and in 2021 he was nominated at the Detroit Music Awards for Outstanding Live Sound Tech. He also spent ten years as an account executive running client projects, budgets and timelines, which is more useful on a wedding day than it sounds. More about Dave.

Weddings with live music and a DJ

At Zingerman's Cornman Farms in Dexter in 2018, Dave sang through Brian and Yu-ju's cocktail hour and then DJ'd their reception: live music and a DJ in one booking. See their wedding. At a 2024 wedding he played piano and guitar for a couple's ceremony and cocktail hour.

At Heather and Tyler's wedding in Owosso in summer 2026, the live moment wasn't ours. Tyler sang Heather a song he'd written for her. Making room for moments like that, and getting the sound right for them, is part of the job too. See Heather and Tyler's wedding, more of the portfolio, and the Michigan venues Dave has played.

How does planning DJ plus live music work?

  1. Check your date. Tell us your date and your venue, choose the Wedding DJ and MC, add DJ plus live music, and tell us which instruments you're thinking about. Dave reads every inquiry and replies himself.
  2. We talk. About how you met, the songs that belong to you, the ones your family can't stay seated for, and the live sound you have in mind.
  3. We plan the music. Entrance songs, first dance, must-plays, do-not-plays, the songs you'd love to hear live, and any ceremony or cocktail-hour music you've added.
  4. The day. We DJ and play the plan, and read the room the whole way through.

Menzo Weddings is based in Ann Arbor and Detroit and plays weddings across Michigan: Ann Arbor, Detroit, Lansing, Grand Rapids and Northern Michigan.

“Dave Menzo, did an outstanding job at my daughter's wedding. He was excellent with all the music, read the crowd, and every one was so complimentary. My 2 year-old grandson couldn't stop dancing!”

Common questions

What is a DJ and live music hybrid?

A wedding DJ set with live musicians playing on top of it. With Menzo Weddings, the hybrid package can include any combination of live drums, guitar, sax and violin with the DJ. The recorded track keeps the full sound of the original; the live instruments make it feel like a performance.

Which instruments can we add?

Drums, guitar, sax and violin, in any combination with the DJ: one instrument, two, or all four. Tell us the sound you have in mind when you check your date and we'll talk through which mix suits your wedding.

Is DJ plus live music a separate booking?

No. It's a hybrid built on the Wedding DJ and MC, the core booking. You book the entertainment for your reception and add live musicians on top of the DJ set, and we plan the two together.

Is the live music on all night?

That's something we plan together. The DJ set carries the night, and the live players come in over it at the moments that matter most to you: a first dance, a song for a parent, the big singalong, the last song.

Can our first dance be played live?

Yes, if you'd like it played for you. Tell us the song early so we can talk through how it will sound live. If you'd rather dance to the original recording, we'll edit it to the length you want instead. Our first dance songs played live guide has ideas.

Is DJ plus live music the same as a live band?

No. A band plays everything live, from its own repertoire. In the hybrid, the DJ set runs the night and live musicians play over the songs you choose, so you keep every song in its original sound. It isn't either-or, though: a live band package can also have a DJ playing between sets and closing out the night.

How much space does it take?

It depends on which instruments you add. One player on top of the DJ needs a little more room than a DJ alone; drums and several players need more. Tell us about your reception room and we'll talk through the setup for your venue.

Can you also play our ceremony and cocktail hour?

Yes. Live ceremony music on acoustic guitar and vocals or piano, and a live cocktail hour set, can also be added to your DJ booking, and we plan them together with the reception.

Can we choose which songs are played live?

Yes. Bring us the songs that matter most to you. Some songs suit live instruments over the track better than others, and we'll tell you honestly how each one will sound. The rest of the night, live moments are picked by reading the room.

Is it louder than a DJ?

The live instruments go through the same sound as the DJ set, mixed so they sit in the song. Dinner stays at talking level, whatever we're playing. If your venue has a sound limit, tell us early, especially if you'd like live drums.

How does it compare in cost to a band or a DJ?

We don't publish prices, because each quote depends on your hours, which instruments you add, and where you're getting married. Our Michigan wedding DJ cost guide explains what drives the price of each option, and if you check your date we'll quote yours.
